Description
- Eryseem-500 is highly effective in the treatment of a wide variety of clinical infections, such as upper respiratory tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections, ear infections, eye infections, skin and soft tissue infections, gastrointestinal tract infections, prophylaxis, osteomyelitis, diptheria, scarlet fever, whooping cough.
Pharmacology
- Macrolides group of antibiotics
- Bacteriostatic or bactericidal action
- Inhibition of ribosomal protein synthesis
- Effective against penicillinase producing staphylococci
- Susceptible micro-organisms include Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria, mycoplasmas, chlamydia, and more.
Absorption
- Erythromycin base destroyed by acid
- Rates of absorption diminished by presence of food
- Peak serum concentrations achieved in 1 to 4 hours
Distribution
- Widely distributed throughout body tissue and fluids
- Some retention in the liver and spleen
- Crosses the placenta and is excreted in the milk
Excretion
- 5 to 15% of the dose excreted in the urine
- Large amounts of unchanged active substance excreted in the bile
Dosage and administration
- Adult and Children over 8 years: 250-500 mg every six hours for mild to moderate infections, may be increased in severe cases
- Elderly: No special dosage recommendation
- Children aged 2 to 8 years: 250 mg every six hours or 30-50 mg/kg body weight per day
- Infants and Children upto 2 years: Doses defined by weight
Interaction
- Potential increase of serum theophylline levels and theophylline toxicity when used with high dosage of theophylline. Dose reduction required in such cases.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Erythromycin
Side effects
- Rare allergic reactions
- Mild abdominal discomfort, sometimes with nausea and vomiting
Pregnancy and lactation
- Caution recommended for pregnant patients and lactating mothers
- Erythromycin crosses the placental barrier and is excreted in breast milk
Precautions and warnings
- Careful use in patients with impaired hepatic function, as Eryseem-500 is excreted principally in the bile
Overdose effects
- Discontinuation of Eryseem-500 in case of overdosage
- Prompt elimination of unabsorbed drug and appropriate measures required
