Description
- Effectively treats a wide variety of clinical infections
- Belongs to the macrolides group of antibiotics

Indications
- Treats upper respiratory tract infections like tonsillitis, sinusitis
- Treats lower respiratory tract infections like bronchitis
- Treats ear infections like otitis media
- Treats eye infections like trachoma
- Treats skin and soft tissue infections like cellulitis
- Treats gastrointestinal tract infections like enterocolitis
- Used for prophylaxis in pre and post-operative situations
- Effective against other infections like osteomyelitis, whooping cough
Pharmacology
- Inhibits microsomal protein synthesis in susceptible organisms
- Active against Gram-positive and some Gram-negative bacteria
- Active against mycoplasmas and chlamydia
Absorption
- Destroyed by acid and administered in the form of stable ester
- Rates of absorption diminished by the presence of food
Blood concentration
- Peak serum concentrations of 0.9 to 1.4 or 0.4 to 1.8 mg/ml achieved in 1 to 4 hours after oral dose
Distribution
- Widely distributed throughout body tissue and fluids
- Some retention in the liver and spleen
Excretion
- 5 to 15 % of the dose excreted in the urine
- Large amounts of the unchanged active substance excreted in the bile
Dosage & Administration
- 250-500 mg every six hours for mild to moderate infections in adults and children over 8 years
- Special dosage recommendation for the elderly not required
Interaction
- May increase serum theophylline levels and potential theophylline toxicity when used with high dosage of theophylline
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Erythromycin

- Rare allergic reactions
- Mild abdominal discomfort occasionally after oral administration
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No evidence of teratogenicity or toxicity in human studies
- Caution advised when prescribing to pregnant patients and lactating mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Given with care in patients with impaired hepatic function
Overdose Effects
- Discontinue in case of overdosage
- Prompt elimination of unabsorbed drug and appropriate measures should be instituted
- Not removed by peritoneal dialysis or haemodialysis
