Pharmacological category

Indications
- Infections in lower respiratory tract, upper respiratory tract, otitis media, skin and soft tissue, non-gonococcal urethritis, cervicitis
Pharmacology
- Acid-stable, readily absorbed, high concentration in phagocytes, acts by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms, greater absorption on an empty stomach, extensively distributed in tissues
Dosage
- 500mg once daily orally for 3 days, 1g single dose for sexually transmitted diseases caused by Chlamydia trachomatis in adults, dosage varies for children based on body weight, dosage for typhoid fever, recommended dosage for IV infusion
Administration
- Oral administration, reconstitution procedure of suspension, should be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meal
Interaction
- Interaction with antacid, carbamazepine, cyclosporin, digoxin, ergot derivatives, methylprednisolone, theophylline, warfarin, terfenadine
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Azithromycin or any other macrolide antibiotic, co-administration of ergot derivatives, hepatic diseases
Side effects
- Mild to moderate gastrointestinal side-effects, allergic reactions, reversible liver transaminase elevations, rare reports of serious hypersensitivity reactions, cases of cholestatic jaundice, transient mild reductions in neutrophil counts, reversible hearing impairment in some patients
Pregnancy and lactation
- Pregnancy category B, caution advised during pregnancy and lactation, should be used if adequate alternatives are not available, caution advised when administered to nursing women
Precautions and warnings
- Rare serious allergic reactions reported, caution advised in patients with renal impairment, not recommended for patients with severe renal impairment, not recommended for patients with hepatic disease, no evidence of effect on patient's ability to drive or operate machinery
Overdose effects
- Typical symptoms include hearing loss, severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, gastric lavage and general supportive measures indicated

- Keep in a dry place away from light and heat, keep out of the reach of children
