Description
Azithromycin Oral Suspension 200 mg/5 ml is indicated for infections in lower respiratory tract, upper respiratory tract, otitis media, skin and soft tissue infections, and sexually transmitted diseases. It is readily absorbed, transported to the site of infection, and has a prolonged half-life, allowing for once daily dosing. Azithromycin belongs to the macrolide class of antibiotics and inhibits microbial protein synthesis, making it effective against a wide range of microorganisms.

Recommended dosage
- Adult: 500 mg once daily orally for 3 days
- Child:
- Over 6 months: 10 mg/kg body weight once daily for 3 days
- 15-25 kg body weight: 200 mg (1 teaspoonful) for 3 days
- 26-35 kg body weight: 300 mg (1½ teaspoonfuls) for 3 days
- 36-45 kg body weight: 400 mg (2 teaspoonfuls) for 3 days

- Co-administration of ergot derivatives

Pharmacological actions

Administration instructions
- Reconstitution procedure:
- Shake the bottle well to loosen the powder
- Add boiled and cooled water up to the water mark of the bottle label
- Shake until powder is completely mixed with water
- Timing: Azithromycin should be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meal
Precautions warnings
- Rare serious allergic reactions reported
- Caution in patients with renal impairment or hepatic disease
Interaction warnings
- Antacid: Take at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after the antacid
- Cyclosporin: Exercise caution before co-administration with cyclosporine; monitor levels if co-administration is necessary
- Digoxin: Possibility of raised digoxin levels; monitor levels in patients receiving concomitant azithromycin and digoxin
- Ergot derivatives: Avoid co-administration with azithromycin
- Methylprednisolone: No significant effect on the pharmacokinetics of methylprednisolone
- Theophylline: No evidence of any pharmacokinetic interaction observed
- Warfarin: Did not alter the anticoagulant effect of warfarin
- Terfenadine: Did not affect the pharmacokinetics of terfenadine
Pediatric use
- Renal impairment: No dose adjustment needed in patients with mild renal impairment
- Hepatic impairment: Not recommended for patients with hepatic disease
- Effects on ability: No evidence to suggest an effect on a patient's ability to drive or operate machinery
Overdose effects
Typical symptoms of overdose include hearing loss, severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Gastric lavage and general supportive measures are indicated.
