Indications

• Lower respiratory tract infections
• Upper respiratory tract infections
• Otitis media
• Skin and soft tissue infections
• Non-gonococcal urethritis
• Cervicitis

Pharmacology

• Absorption on empty stomach
• Time to peak concentration
• Concentration in phagocytes
• Release of azithromycin during phagocytosis
• Plasma clearance
• Biliary excretion
• Microbial protein synthesis interference
• Activity against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
• Active against Chlamydia pneumoniae and Mycoplasma pneumoniae
• Actively transported to site of infection

Dosage

• 500 mg oral dosage for adults
• 10 mg/kg body weight for children over 6 months
• 500 mg dosage for typhoid fever
• Recommended dose for adult patients with community-acquired pneumonia
• Recommended dose for adult patients with pelvic inflammatory disease

Administration

• Reconstitution procedure for suspension
• Recommended time to take the medication before or after meals

Interaction

• Interaction with antacids
• Potential interaction with carbamazepine
• Interference with the metabolism of cyclosporin
• Possible impairment of digoxin metabolism
• Potential risk of ergotism with ergot derivatives
• Interactions with methylprednisolone, theophylline, warfarin, and terfenadine

Contraindications

• Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to Azithromycin
• Contraindicated in co-administration with ergot derivatives
• Contraindicated in patients with hepatic diseases
