Indications

  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Otitis media
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Sexually transmitted diseases in men and women

Pharmacology

  • Time to peak concentration: 2.1 to 3.2 hours
  • High concentration in phagocytes
  • Active transportation to the site of infection
  • Half-life: 68 hours
  • Binding to 50S ribosomal subunit

Dosage

  • Adult dosage: 500 mg once daily for 3 days
  • Children dosage: 10 mg/kg body weight once daily for 3 days
  • Azithromycin Injection: 500 mg as a single daily dose by the intravenous route

Administration

  • Reconstitution procedure for suspension
  • Take at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meal

Interaction

  • Interaction with antacids
  • Potential interactions with carbamazepine, cyclosporin, digoxin, ergot derivatives, methylprednisolone, theophylline, warfarin, terfenadine

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Azithromycin or macrolide antibiotics
  • Co-administration with ergot derivatives
  • Patients with hepatic diseases

Side Effects

  • Mild to moderate gastrointestinal side-effects
  • Allergic reactions such as rash or photosensitivity
  • Reversible elevations in liver transaminases
  • Rare cases of cholestatic jaundice
  • Reversible hearing impairment

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy Category: B
  • No well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Caution in nursing women

Precautions & Warnings

  • Rare serious allergic reactions reported
  • Caution in patients with renal impairment
  • Caution in patients with hepatic impairment

Use in Special Populations

  • No dose adjustment in mild renal impairment
  • Not to be used in patients with hepatic disease
  • No effect on ability to drive or use machines

Overdose Effects

  • Symptoms of overdosage include hearing loss, severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
