Pharmacology

  • Oral administration
  • Rapid absorption
  • Higher absorption on an empty stomach
  • Time to peak concentration: 2.1 to 3.2 hours
  • High concentration in phagocytes
  • Large concentrations released during active phagocytosis
  • Over 50 times higher concentration in tissues than in plasma
  • Half-life: 68 hours
  • Biliary excretion as a major route of elimination
  • Microbial protein synthesis interference

Dosage

  • Adult dosage: 500 mg once daily orally for 3 days
  • Adult sexually transmitted diseases dosage: 1 gm as a single dose
  • Pediatric dosage: 10 mg/kg body weight once daily for 3 days

Administration

  • Reconstitution procedure for suspension
  • Should be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal
