Description

  • Azimete is indicated for infections in lower and upper respiratory tract, otitis media, skin and soft tissue infections, and sexually transmitted diseases. It is readily absorbed, has a high concentration in phagocytes, and acts by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms.

Dosage and Administration

  • 500 mg once daily orally for 3 days for adults, 10 mg/kg body weight once daily for 3 days for children, and 500 mg as a single daily dose by the intravenous route for at least two days for adult patients with community-acquired pneumonia.

Interaction

  • Co-administration of azithromycin and antacids should have a time gap of at least 1 hour. Caution should be exercised before co-administration of azithromycin and cyclosporine or ergot derivatives.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Azithromycin or any other macrolide antibiotic, co-administration of ergot derivatives, and hepatic diseases.

Side Effects

  • Mild to moderate gastrointestinal side-effects, allergic reactions, reversible elevations in liver transaminases, rare cases of cholestatic jaundice, and transient mild reductions in neutrophil counts.

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy Category B, caution advised during lactation.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Rare serious allergic reactions reported, caution advised.

Use in Special Populations

  • No dose adjustment needed in patients with mild renal impairment, not to be used in patients with hepatic disease.

Overdose Effects

  • Typical symptoms include hearing loss, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Gastric lavage and general supportive measures are indicated.
