Description
- Azithromycin oral suspension for infections in respiratory tract, skin & soft tissue, and sexually transmitted diseases. It has pharmacological properties, dosage, administration instructions, interactions, contraindications, side effects, pregnancy & lactation information, precautions, overdose effects, storage conditions, and chemical structure.
Dosage
- Adult: 500 mg once daily orally for 3 days or 500 mg once on day 1, then 250 mg once on days 2-5 for 4 days.
- Children: 10 mg/kg body weight once daily for 3 days for child over 6 months.
Mode of Action
- Azithromycin interferes with microbial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms.
Indications
- Useful for lower respiratory tract infections, upper respiratory tract infections, otitis media, skin and soft tissue infections, and sexually transmitted diseases caused by Chlamydia trachomatis.
Administration
- Reconstitution procedure: Shake the bottle, add boiled and cooled water, shake until powder is completely mixed.
Interaction
- Interacts with antacids, carbamazepine, cyclosporin, digoxin, ergot derivatives, methylprednisolone. No evidence of interaction with theophylline and warfarin.
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to Azithromycin or any other macrolide antibiotic, co-administration of ergot derivatives, and patients with hepatic diseases.
Side Effects
- Mild to moderate gastrointestinal effects, allergic reactions, reversible elevations in liver transaminases, rare cases of serious hypersensitivity reactions, cholestatic jaundice, transient mild reductions in neutrophil counts, reversible hearing impairment in some patients.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B. Caution during pregnancy; unknown secretion in breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings
- Rare serious allergic reactions reported, caution in patients with severe renal impairment, not to be used in patients with hepatic disease.
Use in Special Populations
- No dose adjustment needed in patients with mild renal impairment, not recommended for patients with severe renal impairment or hepatic impairment.
Overdose Effects
- Typical symptoms include hearing loss, severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Gastric lavage and general supportive measures recommended.
Storage Conditions
- Keep in a dry place away from light and heat, out of the reach of children.
