Description
Azi S is indicated for infections caused by susceptible organisms in lower respiratory tract infections, upper respiratory tract infections, otitis media, skin and soft tissue infections, and sexually transmitted diseases in men and women.
Dosage
- 500 mg once daily orally for 3 days
- 500 mg once on day 1, then 250 mg once on days 2-5 for 4 days
- 1 gm as a single dose for sexually transmitted diseases caused by Chlamydia trachomatis
Administration
Azithromycin should be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meal; reconstitution procedure for suspension provided.
Mode of Action
- Readily absorbed
- High concentration in phagocytes
- Binds to 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms
- Interferes with microbial protein synthesis
Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Upper respiratory tract infections
- Otitis media
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Sexually transmitted diseases
Pharmacology
- Time to peak concentration: 2.1 to 3.2 hours
- Prolonged terminal half-life allowing large single dose administration
- Active against various microorganisms
Interaction
- Take at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after antacids
- Exercise caution with co-administration of cyclosporine and digoxin
- No significant effect on theophylline levels
- Monitor warfarin levels if co-administered
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Azithromycin or macrolide antibiotics
- Co-administration with ergot derivatives
- Patients with hepatic diseases
Side Effects
- Mild to moderate gastrointestinal side effects
- Allergic reactions and photosensitivity
- Rare cases of serious hypersensitivity reactions
- Transient reductions in neutrofil counts
- Reversible hearing impairment in some patients
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B
- Not known if secreted in breast milk
- Caution advised during nursing
Precautions & Warnings
- Rare serious allergic reactions reported
- Exercise caution in patients with severe renal impairment
- Avoid use in patients with hepatic disease
Use in Special Populations
- No dose adjustment needed in mild renal impairment
- Not recommended in patients with hepatic disease
- No effect on ability to drive or use machines
Overdose Effects
Typical symptoms include hearing loss, severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea; gastric lavage and supportive measures indicated
Storage Conditions
Keep in a dry place away from light and heat; keep out of the reach of children
