Description
- Azithrocin is used to treat various infections caused by susceptible organisms, such as lower respiratory tract infections, upper respiratory tract infections, otitis media, skin and soft tissue infections, and certain sexually transmitted diseases in men and women. It is also used for community-acquired pneumonia, pharyngitis/tonsillitis, and prevention of bacterial protein synthesis.
Dosage
- 500 mg once daily orally for 3 days in adults; 10 mg/kg body weight once daily for 3 days for children over 6 months; 500 mg (2½ teaspoonfuls) once daily for 7-10 days in typhoid fever; 500 mg as a single daily dose by the intravenous route for at least two days in adults with community-acquired pneumonia.
Pharmacology
- Readily absorbed; greater absorption on an empty stomach; time to peak concentration in adults is 2.1 to 3.2 hours; actively transported to the site of infection; large concentrations released during active phagocytosis; high concentration in tissues; half-life allows large single dose administration.
Administration
- Reconstitution procedure for suspension: Add boiled and cooled water to the water mark, shake until powder is mixed with water; should be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.
Interaction
- Caution when co-administered with antacids, carbamazepine, cyclosporin, digoxin, ergot derivatives, methylprednisolone, theophylline, warfarin, and terfenadine.
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to Azithromycin or any other macrolide antibiotic; co-administration of ergot derivatives; patients with hepatic diseases.

Storage
- Keep in a dry place away from light and heat; keep out of the reach of children.
Side Effects
- Mild to moderate gastrointestinal side-effects; allergic reactions such as rash or photosensitivity; reversible elevations in liver transaminases; rare cases of cholestatic jaundice; transient mild reductions in neutrophil counts; reversible hearing impairment in some patients.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B; caution during pregnancy if adequate alternatives are not available; caution during breastfeeding.
Warnings
- Rare serious allergic reactions reported; caution in patients with renal impairment; not recommended in patients with severe hepatic impairment.
Overdose Effects
- Typical symptoms may include hearing loss, severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea; gastric lavage and general supportive measures are indicated.
