Indications

Pharmacology
- Acid-stable for oral consumption
- Readily absorbed
- High concentration in phagocytes
- Active transport to site of infection
- Bacterial protein synthesis inhibition

Dosage
- 500 mg daily for 3 days (adults)
- 500 mg on day 1, then 250 mg on days 2-5 (adults)
- 1 gm single dose or 500 mg on day 1 followed by 250 mg daily for 2 days (Chlamydia in adults)
- 10 mg/kg body weight daily for 3 days (children)
- 200 mg for 3 days (15-25 kg body weight)
- 300 mg for 3 days (26-35 kg body weight)
- 400 mg for 3 days (36-45 kg body weight)
Administration
- Reconstitution procedure for oral suspension
- To be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal
Interaction
- Interactions with antacids
- Potential interference with cyclosporine metabolism
- Possible effect on digoxin metabolism
- Avoid co-administration with ergot derivatives
- No significant interaction with theophylline
- Co-administration with warfarin may not alter anticoagulant effect
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to azithromycin
- Co-administration with ergot derivatives
- Patients with hepatic diseases
Side effects
