Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Upper respiratory tract infections

Pharmacology
- Orally administered
- Readily absorbed
- Time to peak concentration in adults is 2.1 to 3.2 hours
Dosage
- 500 mg once daily orally for 3 days for adults
- 10 mg/kg body weight once daily for 3 days for children over 6 months
- Azithromycin injection for adult patients with community-acquired pneumonia
Administration
- Reconstitution procedure of suspension
- Should be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meal
Interaction
- Antacids interaction caution
- Cyclosporin interference
- Digoxin metabolism impairment
- Ergot derivatives co-administration contraindicated
- Methylprednisolone interaction study
- No evidence of interaction with theophylline
- Monitoring recommended for warfarin co-administration
- No significant effect on terfenadine pharmacokinetics
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Azithromycin or macrolide antibiotic
- Co-administration of ergot derivatives
Side Effects
- Majority of side-effects gastrointestinal in origin
- Allergic reactions such as rash or photosensitivity observed
- Reversible elevations in liver transaminases
- Rare cases of cholestatic jaundice
- Transient mild reductions in neutrophil counts
- Reversible hearing impairment seen in some patients
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Caution in nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Rare serious allergic reactions reported
- Caution in patients with renal impairment
- Not recommended in patients with hepatic impairment
- No evidence of effect on ability to drive or use machines
