Title
BP-Z 500 mg Capsule
Dosage
- 500 mg once daily orally for 3 days or 500 mg once on day 1 then 250 mg once on days 2-5 for 4 days for adults
- 10 mg/kg body weight once daily for 3 days for children over 6 months
- Azithromycin Injection for IV Infusion: The recommended dose is 500 mg as a single daily dose by the intravenous route for at least two days
Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Upper respiratory tract infections
- Otitis media
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Chlamydia trachomatis infections
Pharmacology
- Absorption: Readily absorbed, greater on empty stomach, time to peak concentration in adults is 2.1 to 3.2 hours
- Distribution: High concentration in phagocytes, actively transported to site of infection
- Tissue Concentration: Over 50 times higher than in plasma due to ion trapping and high lipid solubility
- Elimination: Biliary excretion of azithromycin, approximately 6% appears unchanged in urine
Drug Interaction
- Antacids: Take at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after
- Carbamazepine: No significant effect observed on plasma levels
- Cyclosporin: Exercise caution, monitor cyclosporin levels
- Digoxin: Monitor digoxin levels
- Ergot derivatives: Should not be co-administered
- Methylprednisolone: No significant effect on pharmacokinetics
- Theophylline: No evidence of pharmacokinetic interaction
- Warfarin: Did not alter anticoagulant effect
- Terfenadine: Did not affect pharmacokinetics of terfenadine
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Azithromycin or macrolide antibiotics
- Co-administration of ergot derivatives
- Patients with hepatic diseases
Side Effects
- Mild to moderate gastrointestinal side-effects
- Allergic reactions
- Reversible elevations in liver transaminases
- Rare cases of cholestatic jaundice
- Transient mild reductions in neutrophil counts
- Reversible hearing impairment in some patients
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category: B
- Effect on Fetus: No evidence of harm to the fetus
- Breastfeeding: Use with caution, not known if secreted in breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Rare serious allergic reactions reported
- Caution in patients with renal impairment
- Not recommended in patients with hepatic impairment
Overdose Effects
Typical symptoms include hearing loss, severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Gastric lavage and supportive measures indicated

Dry place away from light and heat, keep out of reach of children
