Description
Macrozith is indicated for infections in lower respiratory tract, upper respiratory tract, otitis media, skin and soft tissue infections, and sexually transmitted diseases. It is acid-stable and can be taken orally without protection from gastric acids.
Dosage
- Adult: 500 mg once daily orally for 3 days
- Children: 10 mg/kg body weight once daily for 3 days
- Azithromycin Injection: 500 mg as a single daily dose by the intravenous route for at least two days
Administration
Reconstitution procedure of suspension includes adding boiled and cooled water to the bottle and shaking until the powder is completely mixed with water. Azithromycin should be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.
Interaction
- Antacids: Azithromycin should be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after the antacid
- Carbamazepine: No significant effect
- Cyclosporin: Exercise caution before co-administration
- Digoxin: May impair metabolism
- Ergot derivatives: Should not be co-administered
- Methylprednisolone: No significant effect
- Theophylline: No evidence of pharmacokinetic interaction
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to Azithromycin or any other macrolide antibiotic, co-administration of ergot derivatives, and in patients with hepatic diseases.
Side effects
- Gastrointestinal side-effects such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort
- Allergic reactions such as rash or photosensitivity
- Reversible elevations in liver transaminases
- Rarely, cases of cholestatic jaundice observed
Pregnancy lactation
- Category: B
- Effects: No evidence of harm to the fetus, caution should be exercised in pregnant and nursing women
Precautions warnings
Rare serious allergic reactions including angioneurotic oedema and anaphylaxis have been reported. Caution should be exercised in using azithromycin in patients with severe renal impairment or hepatic disease.
Special populations
- No dose adjustment needed in mild renal impairment
- Not to be used in patients with hepatic disease
Overdose effects
Typical symptoms of overdosage include hearing loss, severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Gastric lavage and general supportive measures are indicated.
Storage conditions
Keep in a dry place away from light and heat. Keep out of the reach of children.
