Indications

  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Sinusitis
  • Pharyngitis/tonsillitis
  • Otitis media
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Non-gonococcal urethritis
  • Cervicitis

Pharmacology

  • Oral administration
  • Time to peak concentration
  • Absorption on an empty stomach
  • High concentration in phagocytes
  • Biliary excretion
  • Microbial protein synthesis interference
  • Activity against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
  • High tissue concentration

Dosage

  • Adult oral dosage: 500mg once daily for 3 days
  • Adult IV dosage: 500mg single daily dose for at least two days
  • Pediatric dosages based on body weight

Administration

  • Reconstitution of suspension
  • Preferably taken 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal

Interaction

  • Interaction with antacids
  • Cyclosporine metabolism interference
  • Effect on digoxin metabolism
  • Potential ergotism with ergot derivatives
  • Methylprednisolone pharmacokinetic interaction

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Azithromycin or macrolide antibiotics
  • Co-administration of ergot derivatives
  • Hepatic diseases
