Indications

  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Otitis media
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Sexually transmitted diseases

Pharmacology

  • Readily absorbed orally
  • Greater absorption on empty stomach
  • High concentration in phagocytes
  • Active transport to site of infection
  • Bacteriostatic levels maintained for several days
  • Biliary excretion as major elimination route

Dosage

  • 500 mg once daily orally for adults
  • 10 mg/kg body weight once daily for children over 6 months
  • 500 mg as single daily dose by intravenous route for adults with pelvic inflammatory disease
  • No data for safety and effectiveness in children under 16 years

Administration

  • Reconstitution procedure for suspension
  • Take at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meal

Interaction

  • Interaction with antacids
  • Potential interference with cyclosporin metabolism
  • Reported impairment of digoxin metabolism
  • Avoid co-administration with ergot derivatives
  • No significant effect on theophylline levels
  • No alteration of warfarin's anticoagulant effect
