Indications

Pharmacology
- Readily absorbed orally
- Greater absorption on empty stomach
- High concentration in phagocytes
- Active transport to site of infection
- Bacteriostatic levels maintained for several days
- Biliary excretion as major elimination route
Dosage
- 500 mg once daily orally for adults
- 10 mg/kg body weight once daily for children over 6 months
- 500 mg as single daily dose by intravenous route for adults with pelvic inflammatory disease
- No data for safety and effectiveness in children under 16 years
Administration
- Reconstitution procedure for suspension
- Take at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meal
Interaction
- Interaction with antacids
- Potential interference with cyclosporin metabolism
- Reported impairment of digoxin metabolism
- Avoid co-administration with ergot derivatives
- No significant effect on theophylline levels
