Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections treatment

Pharmacology
- Acid-stable for oral consumption
- High absorption on an empty stomach
- Time to peak concentration in adults
- High concentration in phagocytes
- Release of large concentrations of azithromycin during active phagocytosis
- Over 50 times higher concentration in tissues than plasma
- Biliary excretion as a major elimination route
Dosage
- 500 mg once daily orally for 3 days in adults
- 500 mg once on day 1, then 250 mg once on days 2-5 for 4 days in adults
- 1 gm single dose for sexually transmitted diseases in adults
- Dose adjustment for children based on body weight
Administration
- Reconstitution procedure for suspension
- Intake 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal
Interaction
- Interaction with antacids
- Interaction with carbamazepine
- Potential interference with the metabolism of cyclosporin
- Impairment of digoxin metabolism
- Do not co-administer with ergot derivatives
- Negligible effect on methylprednisolone pharmacokinetics
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to azithromycin or macrolide antibiotics
