Pharmacology

  • Acid-stable for oral consumption
  • High absorption on an empty stomach
  • Time to peak concentration in adults
  • High concentration in phagocytes
  • Release of large concentrations of azithromycin during active phagocytosis
  • Over 50 times higher concentration in tissues than plasma
  • Biliary excretion as a major elimination route

Dosage

  • 500 mg once daily orally for 3 days in adults
  • 500 mg once on day 1, then 250 mg once on days 2-5 for 4 days in adults
  • 1 gm single dose for sexually transmitted diseases in adults
  • Dose adjustment for children based on body weight

Administration

  • Reconstitution procedure for suspension
  • Intake 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal

Interaction

  • Interaction with antacids
  • Interaction with carbamazepine
  • Potential interference with the metabolism of cyclosporin
  • Impairment of digoxin metabolism
  • Do not co-administer with ergot derivatives
