Indications

  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Otitis media
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Sexually transmitted diseases

Pharmacology

  • Oral administration
  • Absorption on empty stomach
  • High concentration in phagocytes
  • Binding to 50S ribosomal subunit
  • Interference with microbial protein synthesis

Dosage

  • 500 mg once daily for 3 days (Adults)
  • 1 gm as a single dose for Chlamydia trachomatis (Adults)
  • 10 mg/kg body weight once daily for 3 days (Children)
  • Azithromycin Injection for IV Infusion (Adults)

Administration

  • Reconstitution procedure of suspension
  • Should be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meal

Interaction

  • Antacid interaction
  • Cyclosporin interference
  • Digoxin metabolism impairment
  • Ergot derivatives co-administration contraindicated
  • Methylprednisolone pharmacokinetic interaction
  • Theophylline monitoring
  • Warfarin co-administration with monitoring
  • Terfenadine pharmacokinetics

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Azithromycin or macrolide antibiotics
  • Co-administration of ergot derivatives
  • Patients with hepatic diseases
