Mode of Action
- Oral administration
- Acid-stable
- Readily absorbed
- High concentration in phagocytes
- Active transport to site of infection
- Phagocytosis
- Bacteriostatic levels
- Binding to 50S ribosomal subunit of microorganisms
- Interference with microbial protein synthesis
- Nucleic acid synthesis not affected
- Active against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
Dosage
- 500 mg once daily orally for 3 days (adult)
- 1 gm as a single dose, or 500 mg once on day 1 followed by 250 mg once daily for next 2 days (adult - sexually transmitted diseases)
- 10 mg/kg body weight once daily for 3 days (children over 6 months)
- Azithromycin injection for adult patients with community-acquired pneumonia and pelvic inflammatory disease
Administration
- Reconstitution procedure for suspension
- Shake the bottle well
- Add boiled and cooled water
- Shake until powder is completely mixed with water
- Take at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meal
