Indications

  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Otitis media
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Non-gonococcal urethritis
  • Cervicitis

Pharmacology

  • Readily absorbed
  • Transported to site of infection
  • High concentration in phagocytes
  • Biliary excretion
  • Active against various microorganisms

Dosage

  • Adult:
    • 500 mg once daily orally for 3 days
    • 500 mg once on day 1, then 250 mg once on days 2-5 for 4 days
  • Children:
    • 10 mg/kg body weight once daily for 3 days
    • 200-400 mg for 3 days
    • 500 mg once daily for 7-10 days in typhoid fever
  • Azithromycin Injection:
    • 500 mg as a single daily dose by intravenous route
    • Safety and effectiveness not established in children or adolescents

Administration

  • Reconstitution procedure for suspension
  • Should be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meal

  • Antacid interaction
  • Cyclosporin interference
  • Digoxin metabolism impairment
  • Ergot derivatives contraindication
