Description
Azithromycin is indicated for infections in lower respiratory tract, upper respiratory tract, otitis media, skin and soft tissue infections, and sexually transmitted diseases. It has an acid-stable pharmacology, high tissue concentration, and acts by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms. The dosage varies for adults and children, and intravenous administration is recommended for certain conditions. The reconstitution procedure for suspension involves adding boiled and cooled water. Azithromycin has interactions with antacids, carbamazepine, cyclosporin, digoxin, ergot derivatives, methylprednisolone, theophylline, warfarin, and terfenadine. It is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to azithromycin or any other macrolide antibiotic, co-administration of ergot derivatives, and in patients with hepatic diseases. The common side effects include gastrointestinal symptoms, allergic reactions, reversible elevations in liver transaminases, and rare cases of hearing impairment. Azithromycin falls under Pregnancy Category B and should be used cautiously during pregnancy and lactation. Precautions should be taken with the medication in patients with renal impairment and hepatic impairment, and there is no evidence of azithromycin affecting the ability to drive or operate machinery. Information on overdose effects and storage conditions is provided. The chemical structure of azithromycin is C38H72N2O12 and is presented in a table format.
