Indications

Pharmacology
- Orally administered
- Readily absorbed
- Time to peak concentration
- High concentration in phagocytes
- Transport to site of infection

- Microbial protein synthesis interference
Dosage
- 500 mg once daily for 3 days (Adult oral)
- 1 gm as a single dose or 500 mg once followed by 250 mg for 2 days (Chlamydia trachomatis)
- 10 mg/kg body weight for 3 days for children over 6 months
- 500 mg for typhoid fever
- 500 mg as a single daily IV dose for community-acquired pneumonia
Administration
- Oral administration
- Reconstitution procedure for suspension
- Take at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meal
Interaction
- Antacid co-administration
- Carbamazepine interaction
- Cyclosporin interference
- Pharmacokinetic interaction with digoxin
- Avoid co-administration with ergot derivatives
- No significant effect on methylprednisolone metabolism
- No evidence of theophylline interaction
- Co-administration with warfarin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Azithromycin

- Patients with hepatic diseases

Overdose Effects
- Typical symptoms include hearing loss, severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
- Gastric lavage and general supportive measures indicated
