Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Upper respiratory tract infections
- Sinusitis
- Pharyngitis/tonsillitis
- Otitis media
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Non-gonococcal urethritis

Pharmacology
- Orally administered
- Absorbed on empty stomach
- Peak concentration in 2.1-3.2 hours
- High concentration in phagocytes
- Active transport to site of infection
- Bacteriostatic levels in infected tissue
Dosage
- 500 mg once daily for 3 days
- Oral and IV dosages for adults and children
- Dosage for sexually transmitted diseases
Administration
- Oral suspension reconstitution procedure
- Take at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meal
Interaction
- Interaction with antacids
- Potential interactions with carbamazepine, cyclosporin, digoxin, ergot derivatives, methylprednisolone, theophylline, warfarin, terfenadine
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Azithromycin or macrolide antibiotics
- Co-administration with ergot derivatives
- Patients with hepatic diseases

- Elevations in liver transaminases
- Cholestatic jaundice
- Hearing impairment
- Rare reductions in neutrophil counts
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B
- No adequate studies in pregnant women

- Risk of serious allergic reactions
- Long period of observation and treatment for serious allergic reactions
Use in Special Populations
- No dose adjustment in mild renal impairment
- Caution in severe renal impairment
- Contraindicated in patients with hepatic disease
Overdose Effects
- Typical symptoms of overdosage with macrolide antibiotics
- Gastric lavage and supportive measures indicated
