Description
- Azithromycin is acid-stable and can be taken orally with no need for protection from gastric acids. It is readily absorbed and has a time to peak concentration of 2.1 to 3.2 hours for oral dosage forms.

Pharmacology
- Azithromycin is actively transported to the site of infection due to high concentration in phagocytes
Dosage
- 500 mg once daily orally for 3 days for adults
- 500 mg once on day 1, then 250 mg once on days 2-5 for adults
- 10 mg/kg body weight once daily for 3 days for children over 6 months
Administration
- Reconstitution procedure for suspension involves adding boiled and cooled water to the bottle and shaking until the powder is completely mixed with water.
Interactions
- Azithromycin should be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after antacid
- Cautious co-administration with carbamazepine, cyclosporin, digoxin, ergot derivatives, methylprednisolone, theophylline, warfarin, and terfenadine
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Azithromycin or any other macrolide antibiotic
- Co-administration of ergot derivatives
