Indications
- Treatment of acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis in adults
- Treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis
- Treatment of community-acquired pneumonia
- Treatment of pharyngitis or tonsillitis
- Treatment of uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections
- Treatment of acute otitis media in pediatric patients

Pharmacology
- Inhibition of microsomal protein synthesis
- Binding to the donor site on the 50S subunit
- Prevention of translocation on the bacterial ribosome
- Activity against most Gram-positive bacteria
- Activity against Chlamydia and some Gram-negative bacteria
- More acid-stable than Erythromycin
- Twice the activity against H. influenzae compared to Erythromycin

- Contraindication with HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors
- Contraindication with gastroprokinetic agents
- Contraindication with ergot alkaloids

- Not recommended with certain antiarrhythmics drugs
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to clarithromycin
- History of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction associated with prior use of clarithromycin

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use in neonates and children in appropriate doses
- Avoidance of breast milk from mothers receiving Clarithromycin
- Not recommended for pregnant patients
Precautions & Warnings
- Discontinuation if severe acute hypersensitivity reactions occur
- Avoidance in patients with known QT prolongation
- Avoidance with drugs known to prolong the QT interval
- Avoidance in cases of ventricular arrhythmia, hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, or significant bradycardia
- Discontinuation if signs and symptoms of hepatitis occur
- Balancing potential risk with treatment benefits in patients with coronary artery disease
- Evaluation for Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea if diarrhea occurs
- Exacerbation of myasthenia gravis reported
Use in Special Populations
- Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients 6 months and older
- Safety and effectiveness in prevention of disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) disease in pediatric patients 20 months and older
- No safety study in MAC patients under 20 months
- Safety and effectiveness not established in pediatric patients under 6 months
Overdose Effects
- Gastro-intestinal symptoms from large amounts
- Altered mental status
- Paranoid behavior
- Hypokalemia
- Hypoxemia

Storage Conditions
- Storage in a cool and dry place
- Protection from light & moisture
- Reconstituted suspension must be used within 7 days at room temperature
- Reconstituted suspension must be used within 14 days when refrigerated
