Indications

Pharmacology
- Inhibits microsomal protein synthesis in susceptible organisms
- Binds to the donor site on the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome
- Prevents translocation to the donor site
- Active against most Gram-positive bacteria and Chlamydia
- Active against some Gram-negative bacteria and Mycoplasmas
- Twice the activity of Erythromycin against H. influenzae

Contraindications
- Patients with known hypersensitivity to clarithromycin or macrolide antibacterial drugs

Precautions & Warnings
- Discontinuation for severe acute hypersensitivity reactions
- Avoidance in patients with known QT prolongation or receiving drugs known to prolong the QT interval
- Discontinuation for signs and symptoms of hepatitis
- Increased risk of all-cause mortality in patients with coronary artery disease
- Evaluation for Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea if diarrhea occurs
- Exacerbation of myasthenia gravis
Use in Special Populations
- Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients 6 months and older
- Prevention of disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) disease in pediatric patients 20 months and older with advanced HIV infection
- Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients under 6 months of age
- Safety and effectiveness of Clarin in MAC patients under the age of 20 months
