Indications

  • Treatment of acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis in adults
  • Treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis
  • Treatment of community-acquired pneumonia

  • Treatment of uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections
  • Treatment of acute otitis media in pediatric patients

  • Treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection and duodenal ulcer disease in adults

Pharmacology

  • Inhibits microsomal protein synthesis in susceptible organisms
  • Binds to the donor site on the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome
  • Active against most Gram-positive bacteria and Chlamydia
  • Activity greater than that of Erythromycin against H. Influenzae
  • More acid-stable than Erythromycin
  • Inactive against most species of Gram-negative bacteria

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dosage for different conditions
  • Combination dosing regimens for H. pylori infection
  • Pediatric dosage for specific infections
  • Administration in renal and hepatic impairment

Interaction

  • Contraindicated with specific medications such as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors and antipsychotics

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to clarithromycin
  • Contraindicated in patients with a history of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction associated with prior use of clarithromycin
