Indications
- Treatment of acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis in adults
- Treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis

Pharmacology
- Inhibition of microsomal protein synthesis
- Binding to the donor site on the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome
- Prevention of translocation to the donor site
- Activity against most Gram-positive bacteria and Chlamydia
- More acid-stable than Erythromycin
- Twice the activity of Erythromycin against H. influenzae
- Resistance of most species of Gram-negative bacteria to Clarithromycin

Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to clarithromycin
- History of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction associated with prior use of clarithromycin

- Evaluation for Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea (CDAD) if diarrhea occurs
Use in Special Populations

- Safety and effectiveness in preventing disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) disease in pediatric patients 20 months and older with advanced HIV infection
