Indications
- Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis in adults
- Acute maxillary sinusitis
- Community-acquired pneumonia
- Pharyngitis or tonsillitis

Pharmacology
- Inhibition of microsomal protein synthesis
- Binding to the donor site on the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome
- Preventing translocation to the donor site
- Activity against most Gram-positive bacteria and Chlamydia
- Acid stability
- Twice the activity against H. influenzae compared to Erythromycin

Interaction

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to clarithromycin or macrolide antibacterial drugs
- History of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction associated with prior use of clarithromycin

- Evaluation for Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea if diarrhea occurs
- Exacerbation of myasthenia gravis
Use in Special Populations
- Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients 6 months and older for various indications
- Use in prevention of disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) disease in pediatric patients 20 months and older with advanced HIV infection
- Unestablished safety and effectiveness in MAC patients under 20 months and under 6 months
Overdose Effects
- Gastro-intestinal symptoms with large ingestion
- Reported case of altered mental status, paranoid behaviour, hypokalemia, and hypoxemia with 8 grams ingestion
- Treatment of adverse reactions with prompt elimination of unabsorbed drug and supportive measures
