Description
- Macrolide with antibacterial properties similar to erythromycin
- Active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Effective in upper and lower respiratory tract infections
Pharmacology
- Inhibits protein synthesis by irreversibly binding to the 50s ribosomal subunits
- Blocks transpeptidation or translocation reactions of susceptible organisms
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dose of 300 mg once daily or 150 mg twice a day
- Pediatric dose of 2.5 to 5 mg/kg body weight twice a day
- Best administered on an empty stomach
Interaction
- Mild interaction with theophylline
- No affinity for cytochrome P-450 binding sites
- No alteration in pharmacokinetics of carbamazepine or warfarin
- Antacids, H2-receptor antagonists, and food have no effect on absorption
Contraindications
- Should not be administered simultaneously with ergotamine or its derivatives
