Indications
- Treatment of respiratory infections like pneumonia, acute and chronic bronchitis, bronchopneumonia
- Treatment of ENT infections like tonsillitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, and otitis media
- Treatment of skin infections like folliculitis, furuncles, cellulitis, carbuncles, pyoderma, impetigo, infected dermatitis
- Treatment of genital infections like urethritis, prostatitis, cervicitis, and salpingitis
Pharmacology
- Inhibition of protein synthesis by irreversibly binding to the 50s ribosomal subunits, blocking the transpeptidation or translocation reactions of susceptible organisms, resulting in stunted cell growth
Mode of Action
- Inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 50s ribosomal subunits
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dose: One 300 mg tablet once daily or one 150 mg tablet twice a day for 5-10 days
- Pediatric dose: 2.5 to 5 mg/kg body weight twice a day for 5-10 days
Interaction
- Mild interaction with theophylline
- No affinity for cytochrome P-450 binding sites
- No alteration in the pharmacokinetics of carbamazepine or warfarin
Contraindications
- Should not be administered simultaneously with ergotamine or its derivatives

Antibacterial Properties
- Active against Gram-positive bacteria like staphylococci, streptococci, listeria, corynebacteria
- Active against Gram-negative bacteria such as gonococci, Haemophilus influenzae, Haemophilus ducreyi, Legionella, and campylobacter
Usual Adult Dose
- One 300 mg tablet once daily or one 150 mg tablet twice a day for at least 5-10 days after symptom resolution
Usual Pediatric Dose
- 2.5 to 5 mg/kg body weight twice a day for 5-10 days, based on weight range
Affected Microorganisms
- Targets Mycoplasma and Chlamydia in addition to other susceptible bacteria
Age Group Suitability
- Well tolerated by adults and children
Stomach Administration
- Best administered on an empty stomach
Hepatic Impairment Dose
- 150 mg once daily in severe hepatic impairment
Binding Site Affinity
- No affinity for cytochrome P-450 binding sites
Pharmacokinetics
- No alteration in the pharmacokinetics of carbamazepine or warfarin
- No significant effect from antacids, H2-receptor antagonists, or food on absorption
