Rovamycine 3 MIU (Tablet)

Indications

• Treatment of respiratory tract, buccal cavity, skin and soft tissue infections
• Alternate treatment for gonorrhea in patients allergic to penicillins

Description

• Macrolide antibiotic produced by Streptomyces ambofaciens
• Active against Gram-positive organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae
• Bacterial resistance and cross-resistance reported with erythromycin

Pharmacology

• Inhibits translocation by binding to bacterial 50S ribosomal subunits
• Stimulation of dissociation of peptidyl-tRNA from ribosomes during translocation

Dosage

• Adult dosage: 6 to 9 Million International Units per 24 hours
• Increased dosage for severe infections and gonorrhea
• Children dosage based on 150,000 l.U./kg body weight

Administration

• Stable in gastric juices
• Absorption not affected by food
• Adequate dosage required for beta hemolytic streptococcal infections

Interaction

• Inhibition of carbidopa absorption
• Decreased levodopa plasma levels

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to the drug
• Not suitable for meningitis patients due to low cerebrospinal fluid levels

• Inflamed bowels
• Pruritus
• Tingling or numbness in the skin

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Safety during pregnancy not established

Precautions & Warnings

• Cautious administration in patients with allergies
• Risk of superinfection by nonsusceptible organisms
• Discontinue drug if superinfection occurs

Overdose Effects

• Abdominal discomfort
• Nausea
• Diarrhea
• No specific treatment proposed
• Symptomatic management for oral doses over 4 gm per day
