Description
- Aerobic gram-positive cocci:
- Staphylococcus aureus
- Staphylococcus epidermidis
- Streptococci
- Pneumococci
- Anaerobic gram-negative bacilli:
- Bacteroides species
- Fusobacterium species
- Anaerobic gram-positive non-spore forming bacilli:
- Propionibacterium species
- Eubacterium species
- Actinomyces species
- Anaerobic and microaerophilic gram-positive cocci:
- Peptococcus species
- Peptostreptococcus species
- Microaerophilic streptococci
- C. perferinges
Dosage & Administration
- Clindamycin Capsule:
- 150 mg-300 mg every six hours for serious infections
- 300 mg-450 mg every six hours for more severe infections
- Clindamycin Powder for oral solution:
- 8-12 mg/kg/day divided into 3 or 4 equal doses for serious infections
- 13-16 mg/kg/day divided into 3 or 4 equal doses for severe infections
- 17-25 mg/kg/day divided into 3 or 4 equal doses for more severe infections
- Clindamycin IV/IM Injection:
- 600-1200 mg/day in 2-4 equal doses for serious infections in adults
- 1200-2700 mg/day in 2-4 equal doses for more severe infections in adults
- 15 to 20 mg/kg/day in 3 to 4 equal doses for neonates
- 20 to 40 mg/kg/day in 3 or 4 equal doses for pediatric patients
Interaction
Enhances the action of other neuromuscular blocking agents. Antagonism with erythromycin in vitro.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients previously found to be sensitive to clindamycin or any of the ingredients of this medicine

- Abdominal pain
- Oesophagitis and oesophagial ulcer
- Nausea
- Vomiting and diarrhoea
- Pruritus
- Skin rashes
- Urticaria
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Clindamycin crosses the placenta in humans. Use only if clearly needed.
Precautions & Warnings
Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis
Use in Special Populations
- Newborns and infants: Appropriate monitoring of organ system functions is desirable
- Geriatric use: Dose adjustment not necessary
Overdose Effects
Rare. Haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are not effective in removing Clindamet from the serum. No specific antidote known.

Reconstitution
- Powder for oral solution: Shake well. Add water to the dry mixture. Use within 2 weeks if kept at room temperature
- Injection for intravenous use:
- Dilution: Concentration should not exceed 18 mg per ml. Infusion rates should not exceed 30 mg per minute.
- Dilution and Compatibility: No inactivation or incompatibility with certain IV solutions. Physico-Chemical Stability of diluted solutions monitored for 16-32 days.
