Description
- Lincosamide antibiotic
- Derived from lincomycin
- Effective against aerobic gram-positive cocci
- Effective against anaerobic gram-negative bacilli
- Effective against anaerobic gram-positive non-spore forming bacilli
- Effective against anaerobic and microaerophilic gram-positive cocci
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage for serious infections: 150 mg-450 mg every six hours
- Dosage for more severe infections: 300 mg-2700 mg/day in 2-4 equal doses
- Dosage for pediatric patients: 8-25 mg/kg/day divided into 3 or 4 equal doses
Interaction
- Enhances the action of neuromuscular blocking agents
- Antagonism with erythromycin
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients sensitive to clindamycin

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B
- Crosses the placenta
- Not recommended for nursing mothers if not clearly needed
Precautions & Warnings
- Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease
Use in Special Populations
- Monitoring of organ system functions desirable for newborns and infants
Overdose Effects
- Adverse reactions similar to normal doses expected
- Haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis not effective in removing clindamycin
