Description

  • Lincosamide antibiotic
  • Derived from lincomycin
  • Effective against aerobic gram-positive cocci
  • Effective against anaerobic gram-negative bacilli
  • Effective against anaerobic gram-positive non-spore forming bacilli
  • Effective against anaerobic and microaerophilic gram-positive cocci

Dosage & Administration

  • Dosage for serious infections: 150 mg-300 mg every six hours
  • Dosage for more severe infections: 300 mg-450 mg every six hours
  • Dosage of Clindamycin Powder for oral solution
  • Dosage of Clindamycin IV/IM Injection

Interaction

  • Enhances the action of other neuromuscular blocking agents
  • Antagonism with erythromycin

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients previously found to be sensitive to clindamycin or any of the ingredients

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy Category B
  • Crosses the placenta in humans
  • Appears in breast milk
  • Not recommended for nursing mothers if not clearly needed

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis

Use in Special Populations

  • Appropriate monitoring of organ system functions is desirable for newborns and infants
  • No dose adjustment necessary for geriatric use

Overdose Effects

  • Rarity of overdosage with orally administered Clindax
  • Adverse reactions similar to those seen with normal doses
