Description
- A lincosamide antibiotic used in the treatment of infections caused by susceptible microorganisms.
- Derived from lincomycin.
- Effective against aerobic gram-positive cocci, anaerobic gram-negative bacilli, anaerobic gram-positive non-spore forming bacilli, and anaerobic/microaerophilic gram-positive cocci.
- Used in the treatment of various infections including upper respiratory, lower respiratory, skin and soft tissue, bone and joint, pelvic, intra-abdominal, septicemia, endocarditis, dental, and as alternative therapy for multi-drug resistant Plasmodium falciporum infection.
Dosage & Administration
- Clindamycin Capsule dosage for serious infections and more severe infections.
- Plasma concentration support twice-daily dosing of Clindacin 300 mg capsule, particularly in SSTIs & RTIs.
- Clindamycin Powder for oral solution dosage for serious, severe, and more severe infections, including pediatric patients weighing 10 kg or less.
- Clindamycin IV/IM Injection dosage for adults, neonates, and pediatric patients, with the possibility of switching to capsules when warranted.
- Treatment duration for (3-hemolytic streptococcal infections is at least 10 days.
Interaction
- Enhances the action of other neuromuscular blocking agents, caution advised when used with such agents.
- Antagonism demonstrated between Daclin and erythromycin in vitro, therefore concurrent administration is not recommended.
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients previously found to be sensitive to clindamycin or any of the ingredients of this medicine.
Side Effects
- Adverse effects reported with the use of Daclin including abdominal pain, oesophagitis and oesophageal ulcer, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pruritus, skin rashes, and urticaria.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B.
- Clindamycin crosses the placenta and appears in breast milk, therefore usage in pregnancy and lactation should be determined based on clear need.
Precautions & Warnings
- Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis.
Use in Special Populations
- Administration to newborns and infants requires appropriate monitoring of organ system functions.
- No dose adjustment needed for geriatric use.
Overdose Effects
- Rarity of overdosage with orally administered Daclin.
- Expected adverse reactions similar to normal doses, however, unexpected reactions could occur.
