Description
- Lincocin is a lincosamide antibiotic used in the treatment of infections caused by susceptible microorganisms. It is a semisynthetic antibiotic derived from lincomycin.
Indications
- Effective in the treatment of upper respiratory infections, lower respiratory infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, pelvic infections, intra-abdominal infections, septicemia and endocarditis, dental infections. Also used in combination with quinine or amodiaquine for the treatment of multi-drug resistant Plasmodium falciporum infection.
DosageAndAdministration
- Capsule dosage range: 150 mg-300 mg every six hours for serious infections, 300 mg-450 mg every six hours for more severe infections. Oral solution dosage range: 8-25 mg/kg/day divided into 3 or 4 equal doses. IV/IM Injection dosage range: 600-2700 mg/day in 2-4 equal doses for adults.
Interactions
- Enhances the action of other neuromuscular blocking agents, caution advised when used with such agents. Antagonism demonstrated between Lincocin and erythromycin in vitro, co-administration not recommended.
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients previously found to be sensitive to clindamycin or any of the ingredients of this medicine.
SideEffects
- Adverse effects include abdominal pain, oesophagitis and oesophageal ulcer, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pruritus, skin rashes, urticaria.
PregnancyAndLactation
- Pregnancy Category B, crosses the placenta and appears in breast milk, should be used in pregnancy only if clearly needed, not recommended for nursing mothers if not clearly needed.
PrecautionsAndWarnings
- Caution advised in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis.
SpecialPopulations
- Appropriate monitoring of organ system functions is desirable when administered to newborns and infants. No dose adjustment necessary for geriatric use.
OverdoseEffects
- Overdosage rare with orally administered Lincocin. Expected adverse reactions similar to normal doses. Haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis not effective in removing Lincocin from the serum. Overdosage should be treated with simple gastric lavage.

- Directions for reconstitution of powder for oral solution provided. Lincocin phosphate must be diluted prior to IV administration.
