Description

  • Lincosamide antibiotic derived from lincomycin
  • Effective against aerobic gram-positive cocci such as Staphylococcus and Streptococci
  • Effective against anaerobic gram-negative bacilli including Bacteroides and Fusobacterium species
  • Effective against anaerobic gram-positive non-spore forming bacilli such as Propionibacterium and Actinomyces species
  • Effective against anaerobic and microaerophilic gram-positive cocci like Peptococcus and Peptostreptococcus species

Dosage & Administration

  • Dosage for serious infections: 150 mg-300 mg every six hours
  • Dosage for more severe infections: 300 mg-450 mg every six hours
  • Dosage for pediatric patients based on weight and severity of infection
  • Intravenous dosages for adults based on infection severity and type of bacteria

Interaction

  • Enhances the action of neuromuscular blocking agents
  • Antagonistic interaction with erythromycin demonstrated in vitro

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients previously sensitive to clindamycin or any ingredients of the medicine

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prescribed with caution in individuals with history of gastrointestinal disease
  • Particular caution in colitis patients

Use in Special Populations

  • Monitoring of organ system functions desirable in newborns and infants
  • No dose adjustment necessary for geriatric use

Overdose Effects

  • Rare cases of overdose reported
  • Adverse reactions similar to normal doses expected
  • Haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis not effective in removal
  • Treatment with gastric lavage recommended
