Description
- Lincosamide antibiotic
- Semisynthetic antibiotic derived from lincomycin
- Effective against aerobic gram-positive cocci
- Effective against anaerobic gram-negative bacilli
- Effective against anaerobic gram-positive non-spore forming bacilli
- Effective against anaerobic and microaerophilic gram-positive cocci
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage of Clindamycin Capsule: 150 mg-300 mg every six hours for serious infections
- Dosage of Clindamycin Powder for oral solution: 8-25 mg/kg/day divided into 3 or 4 equal doses for different infection severities
- Dosage of Clindamycin IV/IM Injection for adults and special populations
- Avoiding oesophageal irritation by taking capsules with a full glass of water
Interaction
- Enhances action of neuromuscular blocking agents
- Antagonism with erythromycin in vitro
- Caution with concurrent administration of neuromuscular blocking agents
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients sensitive to clindamycin or its ingredients

- Oesophagitis and oesophageal ulcer
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Pruritus
- Skin rashes
- Urticaria
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B
- Crosses the placenta, appears in breast milk
- Use in pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Not recommended for nursing mothers if not clearly needed
Precautions & Warnings
- Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis
Use in Special Populations
- Appropriate monitoring in newborns and infants
- No dose adjustment needed for geriatric use
Overdose Effects
- Rarity of overdosage with orally administered clindamycin
- Adverse reactions similar to normal doses expected
- Haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis not effective in removing clindamycin from serum
- Treatment with simple gastric lavage
- No specific antidote known
