Description
- Lincosamide antibiotic
- Derived from lincomycin
- Effective against susceptible microorganisms including aerobic gram-positive cocci and anaerobic bacteria
Dosage & Administration
- Clindamycin Capsule:
- Dosage for serious infections: 150-300 mg every six hours
- Dosage for more severe infections: 300-450 mg every six hours
- Clindamycin Powder for oral solution:
- Dosage for serious infections: 8-12 mg/kg/day divided into 3 or 4 equal doses
- Dosage for severe infections: 13-16 mg/kg/day divided into 3 or 4 equal doses
- Dosage for more severe infections: 17-25 mg/kg/day divided into 3 or 4 equal doses
- Clindamycin IV/IM Injection:
- Dosage for serious infections in adults: 600-1200 mg/day in 2- 4 equal doses
- Dosage for more severe infections in adults: 1200-2700 mg/day in 2-4 equal doses
Interaction
Enhances the action of neuromuscular blocking agents, should be used with caution in such patients. Antagonism demonstrated between Cleocin and erythromycin, should not be administered concurrently.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients previously found to be sensitive to clindamycin or any of the ingredients.

Pregnancy & Lactation
Category B. Crosses the placenta. Should be used in pregnancy only if clearly needed. Reported to appear in breast milk, not recommended for nursing mothers if not clearly needed.
Precautions & Warnings
Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis.
Use in Special Populations
- Newborns and infants: Appropriate monitoring of organ system functions is desirable.
- Geriatric use: Dose adjustment not necessary.
Overdose Effects
Rarity of overdosage with orally administered Cleocin. Haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are not effective in removing Cleocin from the serum. Treat overdosage with simple gastric lavage. No specific antidote known.
