Description
- Lincosamide antibiotic
- Derived from lincomycin
- Effective against aerobic gram-positive cocci
- Effective against anaerobic gram-negative bacilli
- Effective against anaerobic gram-positive non-spore forming bacilli
- Effective against anaerobic and microaerophilic gram-positive cocci
Dosage and Administration
- Dosage for Clindamycin Capsule: 150 mg-300 mg every six hours for serious infections
- Dosage for Clindamycin Powder for oral solution: 8-12 mg/kg/day divided into 3 or 4 equal doses for serious infections
- Dosage for Clindamycin IV/IM Injection: 600-1200 mg/day in 2-4 equal doses for serious infections in adults
Interaction
- Caution with neuromuscular blocking agents
- Antagonism demonstrated with erythromycin in vitro
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients sensitive to clindamycin

- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea

- Skin rashes

Pregnancy and Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B
- Crosses the placenta
- Appears in breast milk
- Use only if clearly needed in pregnancy
- Not recommended for nursing mothers if not clearly needed

- Prescribed with caution in individuals with gastrointestinal disease
- Appropriate monitoring of organ system functions desirable in newborns and infants
Use in Special Populations

- No dose adjustment necessary for geriatric use
Overdose Effects
- Rare with orally administered Cleocin
- Adverse reactions similar to normal doses can be expected
- Haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis not effective in removing Cleocin from serum
- Treat with simple gastric lavage
