Description
- Lincosamide antibiotic
- Derived from lincomycin
- Effective against aerobic gram-positive cocci
- Effective against anaerobic gram-negative bacilli
- Effective against anaerobic gram-positive non-spore forming bacilli
- Effective against anaerobic and microaerophilic gram-positive cocci
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage for serious infections: 150 mg-300 mg every six hours
- Dosage for more severe infections: 300 mg-450 mg every six hours
- Dosage for bone & joint infections: 300 mg capsule 3-4 times daily
- Pediatric dosage: 8-25 mg/kg/day divided into 3 or 4 equal doses
- Dosage for adults with serious infections: 600-1200 mg/day in 2-4 equal doses
- Dosage for more severe infections in adults: 1200-2700 mg/day in 2-4 equal doses
Interaction
- Enhances the action of other neuromuscular blocking agents
- Antagonism with erythromycin
Contraindications
- Patients sensitive to clindamycin or any of the ingredients

- Abdominal pain
- Oesophagitis and oesophageal ulcer
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Pruritus
- Skin rashes
- Urticaria
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Category B for pregnancy
- Crosses the placenta
- Appears in breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease
Use in Special Populations
- Appropriate monitoring in newborns and infants
- No dose adjustment necessary for geriatric use
Overdose Effects
- Rare overdosage with similar adverse reactions
- Haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis not effective
- Treated with simple gastric lavage
