Description
- Lincosamide antibiotic
- Derived from lincomycin
- Effective against aerobic gram-positive cocci
- Effective against anaerobic gram-negative bacilli
- Effective against anaerobic gram-positive non-spore forming bacilli
- Effective against anaerobic and microaerophilic gram-positive cocci
Dosage & Administration
- Serious Infections: 150 mg-300 mg every six hours
- More severe infections: 300 mg-450 mg every six hours
- Dosage range for serious infections: 8-12 mg/kg/day divided into 3 or 4 equal doses
- Dosage range for severe infections: 13-16 mg/kg/day divided into 3 or 4 equal doses
- Dosage range for more severe infections: 17-25 mg/kg/day divided into 3 or 4 equal doses
- Adult dosage for serious infections: 600-1200 mg/day in 2-4 equal doses
- Adult dosage for more severe infections: 1200-2700 mg/day in 2-4 equal doses
- Dosage for neonates: 15 to 20 mg/kg/day in 3 to 4 equal doses
- Dosage for pediatric patients: 20 to 40 mg/kg/day in 3 or 4 equal doses
Interaction
- Endamycin enhances the action of other neuromuscular blocking agents
- Antagonism with erythromycin demonstrated in vitro
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients sensitive to clindamycin or any ingredients of the medicine

- Oesophagitis and oesophageal ulcer
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Pruritus
- Skin rashes
- Urticaria
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B
- Crosses the placenta in humans
- Should be used in pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Reported to appear in breast milk
- Not recommended for nursing mothers if not clearly needed
Precautions & Warnings
- Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis
Use in Special Populations
- Appropriate monitoring of organ system functions desirable for newborns and infants
- No dose adjustment necessary for geriatric use
Overdose Effects
- Rare with orally administered Endamycin
- Haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis not effective in removing Endamycin from the serum
- Treated with simple gastric lavage
- No specific antidote known
