Indications

Pharmacology
- Exerts bacteriostatic effect
- Active against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria
- Particularly active against Salmonella typhi and Haemophilus influenzae
- Interferes with protein synthesis
- Rapid absorption from GI tract
- Mainly excreted in urine
Dosage & Administration
- Prescribed at recommended doses
- Expected inhibition at concentrations of 5 to 20 mcg/ml
- Adult dosage: 50 mg/kg/day in divided doses
- Pediatric dosage: 50 mg/kg/day divided at 6-hour intervals
- Close observation for adverse reactions
Interaction
- Retards biotransformation of other drugs
- Competitive inhibition with erythromycin and lincomycin
- Reduced concentrations with rifampin therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to chloramphenicol
- Avoid use in trivial infections
- Not indicated for colds or viral influenza

- Detect early peripheral hematologic changes
- Adequate monitoring for bone marrow depression
Overdose Effects
- Toxicity evidenced by hemopoietic effects
