Description
- Ramicol is an antibiotic clinically useful for serious infections caused by susceptible organisms when other therapeutic agents are ineffective or contraindicated. It exerts a bacteriostatic effect on a wide range of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria and is active against rickettsiae, the lymphogranuloma-psittacosis group, and Vibrio cholerae.

Pharmacology
- Exerts a bacteriostatic effect on Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria

- Interferes with or inhibits protein synthesis in cells
- Rapidly absorbed from the GI tract
- Mostly excreted in urine
- Enters cerebrospinal fluid even without inflammation
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended doses for therapeutic activity
- Serum concentration should fall within 5-20 mcg/ml over most of the treatment period
- Close observation for adverse reactions
- Dosage adjustments for hepatic or renal impairment
- Effective dosages for adults and pediatric patients
Interaction
- Retards biotransformation of certain drugs
- Caution when administered concomitantly with specific antibiotics
- Competitive inhibition may occur with other antibiotics
- Rifampin therapy can reduce Ramicol concentrations
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in individuals with hypersensitivity
- Not to be used for trivial infections or where not indicated
- Not for colds, viral influenza, or infections of the throat
- Not to be used as a prophylactic agent

- Adequate hematologic functions should be closely monitored
- Hematologic determinations may detect early peripheral changes
