Indications
- Treatment of ocular infections
- Infections of conjunctiva and cornea
- Susceptible organisms include Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, E.coli, etc.
Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic
- Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis
- Interferes with transfer of activated amino acids
Dosage & Administration
- 1 or 2 drops in the conjunctival sac
- 4-6 times per day for the first 72 hours
- Every 4 hours thereafter
- Treatment duration approximately 7 days
- Avoid use for more than 3 weeks without re-evaluation
Interaction
- Inhibits Chymotrypsin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Chloramphenicol or any ingredients

- Burning
- Stinging
- Conjunctival hyperemia
- Blood dyscrasia
- Allergic or inflammatory reactions
- Vesicular and maculopapular dermatitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety not established for use in pregnancy and lactation
- Use only when considered essential by physicians

- Avoid for minor infections or prophylaxis
- Avoid repeated or prolonged treatment
- Risk of blood dyscrasias

- Unlikely to cause toxicity due to low antibiotic content
