Indications
- Treatment of ocular infections involving the conjunctiva and/or cornea
- Caused by Cloram-susceptible organisms
- Infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, E.coli, H. influenzae, Klebsiella/Enterobacter spp, Moraxella lacunata, and Neisseria species
Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic
- Inhibition of bacterial protein synthesis
- Interference with the transfer of activated amino acids
Dosage & Administration
- Instill 1 or 2 drops in the conjunctival sac 4-6 times per day for the first 72 hours
- Then every 4 hours thereafter
- Treatment duration approximately 7 days
- Not to be continued for more than 3 weeks without re-evaluation by the physician
Interaction
- Inhibition of chymotrypsin if given simultaneously with Cloram
Contraindications
- History of hypersensitivity to Chloramphenicol
- Hypersensitivity to any ingredients of the preparation
Side Effects
- Burning
- Stinging
- Conjunctival hyperemia
- Blood dyscrasia
- Allergic or inflammatory reactions
- Vesicular and maculopapular dermatitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use only when considered essential by the physicians
- Safety not established
Precautions & Warnings
- Never given for minor infections or prophylaxis
- Repeated course and prolonged treatment should be avoided
- Possible occurrence of blood dyscrasias
- Granulocytopenia, thrombocytopenia, and moderate anemia
Overdose Effects
- Low toxicity due to low content of antibiotic
- Unlikely toxicity from accidental ingestion
