Indications
- Treatment of ocular infections
- Infections of conjunctiva and cornea
- Susceptible organisms include Staphylococcus aureus
- Susceptible organisms include Streptococcus pneumoniae
- Susceptible organisms include E.coli
- Susceptible organisms include H. influenzae
- Susceptible organisms include Klebsiella/Enterobacter spp
- Susceptible organisms include Moraxella lacunata
- Susceptible organisms include Neisseria species
Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic
- Inhibition of bacterial protein synthesis
- Interference with transfer of activated amino acids
Dosage & Administration
- Instill 1 or 2 drops in the conjunctival sac
- 4-6 times per day for the first 72 hours
- Every 4 hours thereafter
- Treatment continued for approximately 7 days
- Not to be continued for more than 3 weeks without re-evaluation by the physician
Interaction
- Inhibition of chymotrypsin if given simultaneously
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Chloramphenicol

- Allergic or inflammatory reactions
- Vesicular dermatitis
- Maculopapular dermatitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety not established
- Use only when considered essential by the physician
Precautions & Warnings
- Not to be given for minor infections
- Refrain from prophylaxis use
- Avoid repeated and prolonged treatment
- Risk of blood dyscrasias

- Low toxicity if accidentally ingested
