Opsophenicol 0.5% (Ophthalmic Solution)

Indications

• Treatment of ocular infections
• Infections of conjunctiva and/or cornea
• Caused by specific susceptible organisms

Pharmacology

• Broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic
• Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis
• Interferes with transfer of activated amino acids

Dosage & Administration

• Instill 1 or 2 drops in the conjunctival sac
• 4-6 times per day for first 72 hours
• Every 4 hours thereafter
• Treatment duration approximately 7 days
• Avoid prolonged treatment without re-evaluation

Interaction

• Possible inhibition of Chymotrypsin

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to Chloramphenicol or any ingredients

• Burning
• Stinging
• Conjunctival hyperemia
• Allergic or inflammatory reactions
• Blood dyscrasia
• Vesicular and maculopapular dermatitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Safety not established for use in pregnancy and lactation
• Use only when considered essential by physicians

Precautions & Warnings

• Avoid use for minor infections or prophylaxis
• Repeated course and prolonged treatment should be avoided
• Possible occurrence of blood dyscrasias after prolonged use

Overdose Effects

• Accidental ingestion unlikely to cause toxicity

• Protect from light
• Keep out of reach of children
